Current Update

We were jumping between the island of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao for the past 3-4 weeks. We made friends with locals/tourists on both Islands and became very comfortable with our surroundings. We had our favorite spots that we frequented often for food and drinks. It was hard to leave because we were treated so well by the locals, but we decided the time had come to take off. We flew to Cambodia 2 days ago. For now, here’s some info on our experience on Koh Phangan Island.

The Hostel Manager Nyi Nyi

When we arrived we were immediately greeted by the hostel Manager Nyi Nyi outside. Nyi Nyi is 23 years old and from Burma (Myanmar). He really made our stay at the Shenanigans awesome. He is probably the most genuine and nicest person I have ever met. He truly cares about people and has become a really good friend. If we needed anything he would have us jump on the back of his motorbike and take us anywhere. He refused to take tips from anyone. He would play awesome music in the common area all day and watch movies with us on the big screen at night (when we weren’t partying). Even after leaving the hostel to go to another Island he stayed in contact with us to see if we were okay. When Tracy decided to take off he went to wake her up at 5 am so she didn’t miss her taxi. We love you Nyi Nyi! Thank you for everything!

Lazy Shenanigans Hostel

Our hostel was called “The Lazy Shenanigans,” and we soon realized where its name came from. The common room is full of couches, music, tv’s and one really lazy cat! Full Moon party week is when the shenanigans start. The music is blaring and the drinks are flowing every night. The hostel was fully booked during the Full Moon week. All of the staff are burmese and very nice. The mornings are spent lounging on the couches watching movies and listening to chill music while people recover from the previous night.

We made some amazing friends while staying at The Shenanigans. It made our experience much more enjoyable being surrounded by awesome and fun people from all around the world. We pretty much spent all week with eachother, which made it easy to become friends.

Slip ‘N Fly

We rented motorbikes our 2nd day and drove to Slip N Fly. Slip N Fly is a little waterpark in the Jungle with a couple huge slides. I was sore for a week after hitting the water so hard, but good times.

Thai Massage

The next day I went and got my first and much needed Thai massage. I was so impressed. I have never had a Thai massage before so I didn’t know what to expect, but all I can say is it was amazing! They found every muscle in my body and cracked my neck and back like I was at a chiropractor. Mac was making fun of me because of the noises I was making, but he was only having a foot massage. He later got a full Thai massage and had some noises of his own. Haha!

Full Moon Warm-up Party

The warm-up party was thrown on the beach 2 nights before the Full Moon Party with loud music, firedancers, fire jump roping, fire limbo, arm wrestling competitions and a lot of buckets. Bucket cocktails are popular in Thailand. They definitely get the job done!

Jungle Party

We went to the Jungle party our 2nd night, which is pretty much explanatory (a party in the Jungle). There were pricey drinks and DJ’s dropping beats. It was crazy crowded and hot, but we had a good time hanging out with our new friends we made at the hostel.

Full Moon Party

The Full Moon party was our 3rd night and happens about every month when there is a full moon (duh). Everyone gets dressed up in neon colors and paints eachother. The pre-party (“warm-up” as Thailand calls it) starts at the hostel with Nyi Nyi making damn good buckets and playing loud ass music while you paint eachother.

The Full Moon party is on the beach and was less than a 5 min walk from our hostel and went all night long. This is a good time to let you know that the red bull here is nothing like the states. They are smaller and much more potent. Needless to say, we made it to sunrise no problem. We left the party around 7am and the music and dancing was still going strong. It was one of the coolest experiences watching the sunrise on the beach with all of our new friends.

Treehouse Adventure

The next day most of our friends left the Island except Jenny and Jessica. We rented motorbikes with them and toured the island. We found a really cool tree house out in the Jungle, where we met our new friend Oliver from Dubai.

Amsterdam Bar

We toured more of the island with Oliver and ended up at Amsterdam bar for the sunset. Amsterdam bar is at the top of a hill that overlooks the water.

Man U Restaurant

We frequented this restaurant a lot. Often for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food was delicious and very inexpensive (about $2-3) compared to other places on the island (about $3-6). The staff treated us very well. We frequented so often that the owner would give us something free every time. Sometimes an app, desert or drink. We always brought in our new friends from the hostel, which I’m sure she appreciated.

Yes, you have to spray yourself with a hose after you do your business and then pat dry. Toilet paper can't be flushed down because of bad sewer systems.
